Child Autism is a developmental disorder commencing in early childhood. The symptoms and treatment are explained here.
Watch this motivating Ted.com video on Temple Grandin. This remarkable lady is autistic and she is responsible for the humane design of 90% of the abattoirs in USA. Here she explains why the world needs all kinds of minds.
Boys are 4 times more likely than girls to be affected. The main features are :
The cause of autism is unknown. The problem appears to lie in that part of the brain responsible for the development of language. I have noticed some hereditary factor in the autistic children I have come in contact with.
Here's a video by Steve Silberman explaining the forgotten history of autism. Decades ago, few pediatricians had heard of autism. In 1975, 1 in 5,000 kids was estimated to have it. Today, 1 in 68 is on the autism spectrum. What caused this steep rise? Steve Silberman points to “a perfect storm of autism awareness” — a pair of psychologists with an accepting view, an unexpected pop culture moment and a new clinical test. But to really understand, we have to go back further to an Austrian doctor by the name of Hans Asperger, who published a pioneering paper in 1944. Because it was buried in time, autism has been shrouded in misunderstanding ever since.
The belief that the MMR vaccination might cause child autism has been thoroughly debunked. The doctor responsible for these fears had been struck off the medical register though he still has many supporters. This belief might be due to the fact that autism is normally detected at about the same time that the MMR vaccine is administered, that is between 12 to 18 months.
Watch this Ted.com video by Alix Generous: How I learned to communicate my inner life with Asperger's. Alix Generous is a young woman with a million and one ideas — she's done award-winning science, helped develop new technology and tells a darn good joke (you'll see). She has Asperger's, a form of autistic spectrum disorder that can impair the basic social skills required for communication, and she's worked hard for years to learn how to share her thoughts with the world. In this funny, personal talk, she shares her story — and her vision for tools to help more people communicate their big ideas.
Child Autism SymptomsMany autistic children appear physically healthy and well developed. However, they may show many disturbed behaviours. As infants, they may cry a lot and need little sleep. They resist change in routine. They avoid eye contact and often behave as if they are deaf. Observations by my friend Em (See Em's Story if you have not read it already) who taught several autistic children indicated that they might in fact feel some pain in the head when they tried to maintain eye contact with someone.
Normal bonding between mother and child does not occur and prolonged bouts of crying do not respond to cuddling. As the child gets older, they may display frequent tantrums, destructiveness, hyperactivity and a disregard for danger, requiring constant supervision to prevent harm to themselves or their environment. Severe cases of child autism may also involve loud screaming when things are not as they should be to them or their routine has been interrupted.
Child Autism Treatment
If you suspect that there might be something wrong with your child, early intervention and consistent home management is crucial. Please seek advice by consulting your general practitioner or family physician. They can refer you to a paediatrician or child psychiatrist if necessary. You can also obtain assistance from your country's or state's Autism Association, which can provide full information regarding assessment and disgnostic services, management programmes and family support services.
Take precaution if you have a family member who have been diagnosed with autism by taking Omega fish oils when you are pregnant. Inconclusive research has shown that it might reduce the severity of autistic symptoms, improve eye acuity and intelligence in babies.
Speech therapy can help with language development. Most difficult behaviours can be reduced or eliminated by a programme of firm and consistent management.
Behavioural and emotional problems may get worse in adolescence, especially during sexual development. High functioning autistic children can learn to overcome their difficulties and integrate into society quite seamlessly.
